site.btaGreenpeace: Ministry of Energy Should Become Ministry of Renewable Energy

Sofia, June 21 (BTA) - Meeting with caretaker Energy Minister
Andrei Zhivkov on Monday, representatives of Greenpeace Bulgaria
recommended that his Ministry change its name to Ministry of
Renewable Energy, the environmental organization told BTA.

Balin Balinov, coordinator for the energy solutions campaign of
Greenpeace Bulgaria, presented to the Ministry an operational
solar panel. Zhivkov said the panel will be installed in a
conspicuous place and the environmentalists' idea about changing
the Ministry's name will be conveyed to his successor in the
next regular government.

Earlier in the day, Greenpeace Bulgaria held a performance art
event in front of the Energy Ministry offices marking the
beginning of astronomical summer. The event involved the
symbolic inauguration of a Ministry of Renewable Energy.
Greenpeace volunteers entertained passers-by and treated them to
free coffee made by a machine which runs on solar power.

Balinov said: "For a very long time now, the Ministry of Energy
has supported projects related to fossil fuels such as oil and
gas as well as nuclear fuel. But the energy system has a
different future: it will be a decentralized system in which
people will be able to produce the energy they need. The
Ministry can install its own renewable energy system on top of
its building. You can see how many air conditioners are
currently powered by electricity produced mainly from fossil
fuels." NV/VE
