Ottawa, August 23 (BTA) - The GERB political party will be admitted to the International Democratic Union (IDU), the party's press centre said on Saturday. This transpired after the party was granted an observer status at the IDU meeting in Ottawa (Canada). GERB's bid was presented by Bulgarian MEP from GERB/European People's Party, Eva Paounova.

GERB was proposed as member by the German Christian Social Union (CSU). Its candidature was supported by all IDU member-parties.

According to the standard procedure, the candidate party would first be granted an observer status. GERB is expected to acquire full membership in November 2014 during an official forum of the Union.

GERB leader Boyko Borissov commented that the membership of IDU, which includes parties from across the world, offers an exceptional opportunity for Bulgaria.
