Timber Exporters Block Traffic at Bulgarian-Greek Border Checkpoint

Haskovo, Southern Bulgaria, March 24 (BTA) - Timber exporters
set up a road block at the Kapitan Petko Voivoda checkpoint on
the Bulgarian-Greek border on Tuesday, BTA learned from one of
the protestors.

The protest was prompted by the three-month moratorium on raw
timber export, which is detrimental to business, said Dimiter
Nikolov, adding that exporters are not to blame for unlawful
logging. He warned that roads would be blocked until the
moratorium was lifted.

Police guarding the rally said there were about one hundred
protestors.

Parliament imposed the moratorium in early March in a bid to
crack down on illegal logging. Traders already staged a  protest
outside the Parliament building on March 18.
