Machine Voting to Be Available in 50 Sections in Sofia at Local Elections


Sofia, August 20 (BTA) - Machine voting will be available in 50 sections in Sofia at the forthcoming local elections, Central Election Commission member Alexander Andreev told journalists Thursday.

Citizens can use machine voting only when casting their votes for municipal councillors. Voting for district mayors and Sofia mayor has to be done through the standard procedure with a ballot box, the Central Election Commission (CEC) specified.

The CEC has received but not yet considered the proposal of the Union of Democratic Forces, which suggests that the numbers of the parties on the ballot papers start from 100 up so as to avoid confusion with the numbers of the individual candidates during preferential voting. In Andreev's words, a CEC decision to this effect will require a legislative change. The CEC has received similar proposals from citizens, he added.
