EC Extends Compensation for Fruit, Vegetables Sector over Russian Embargo
Sofia, August 27 (BTA) - The State Fund Agriculture said on Thursday that the European Commission has extended compensation for fruit and vegetables farmers after Russia extended ban on EU imports until July 2016.
The measures consist of withdrawing produce from the market for free distribution to charitable and non-profit organizations, schools, kindergartens, school camps, hospitals, retirement homes, prisons and for animal feed, and of non-harvesting of vegetables and fruits.
The food types covered by the compensation scheme are unchanged from 2014: tomatoes, carrots, white cabbage, peppers, cauliflowers, cucumbers and gherkins, mushrooms, apples, pears, red berries, table grapes, plums, peaches and nectarines.
Farmers may be eligible for compensation for transport costs incurred when produce is withdrawn from the market.
