European Court of Human Rights Expects Vulnerable Roma in Varna to Receive Protection
Sofia, August 27 (BTA) - The European Court of Human Rights
(ECHR) has sent another notification to the Bulgarian government
dismissing a third claim by residents of Maksuda, a Roma
neighbourhood in the seaside city of Varna, who had insisted
that their eviction and the demolition of their illegal houses
should stop, the Justice Ministry reported on Thursday.
While rejecting the residents' claim, ECHR wants to know what
measures have been taken by the Bulgarian authorities to find
accommodation for vulnerable individuals who became homeless
after their houses in Maksuda were demolished. More
specifically, the court expects that the children from the
destroyed homes will be accommodated in suitable conditions
without being separated from their parents, and that equally
appropriate conditions should be provided in a timely fashion to
any elderly people, persons with disabilities and other
vulnerable individuals.
The Justice Ministry refuted media allegations that the
government has promised not to demolish any more buildings in
the Maksuda neighbourhood. In truth, the municipal authorities
in Varna are not planning to evict any more residents for the
time being, which is a different matter, the Ministry said.
