Bulgaria Celebrates 107th Anniversary of Its Independence

Sofia, September 22 (BTA) - Bulgaria on Tuesday celebrates the 107th anniversary of the declaration of its independence.

On September 22, 1908, this country joined the family of independent States when Prince Ferdinand I read a Manifesto proclaiming the vassal Principality of Bulgaria a kingdom independent of the Ottoman Empire. The ceremony started with a prayer service at Turnovo's historic Church of the Forty Holy Martyrs, which is why the celebrations of this occasion now culminate in the mediaeval Bulgarian capital.

Tuesday's observances began in the morning, as the national flag was raised with military honours above the site of the royal palace on the fortified hill of Tsarevets in Veliko Turnovo. National Assembly Chair Tsetska Tsacheva and MPs are in the city for a solemn tattoo and roll call in the evening.

The National Museum of History in Sofia is holding an open day, with admission free for all visitors.
