Public Works Minister Says over Lv 60 Mln Are Needed to Rehabilitate Key Five Tunnels in Bulgaria

Sofia, October 13 (BTA) - Over 60 million leva are necessary for
the rehabilitation of the five main tunnels along Bulgarian
roads, Regional Development and Public Works Minister Liliyana
Pavlova told journalists Tuesday. The Road Agency does not have
the budget for overhauling the tunnels and such repairs have not
been made in 25 years or more because of the lack of funding.

Speaking after participation in a conference on the subject of
European territorial cooperation in Bulgaria, Pavlova expressed
hope that the funding for repair of the tunnels will improve in
the future. Together with the money necessary for the viaducts
along the Trakia and Hemus motorways, the funds add up to
hundreds of millions of leva.

Commenting on last week's accident in the Vitinya Tunnel,
Pavlova said no alert about a liquid on the tarmac had been
received. The tunnel is located in a region with a high
occurrence of fogs and high humidity, she added. A
multiple-vehicle collision on the Hemus Motorway claimed three
lives on October 8. Fifty-one vehicles, ten of which heavy
trucks, were involved in the crash. The inspection on the case
has not been concluded yet.
