Sofia, February 9 (BTA) - The Association of Automobile Producers is supportive of the Environment Ministry's resolve to tighten controls on car emissions through the annual technical checks and on the road, the Ministry said in a press release Friday. Meeting on Friday, Environment Minister Neno Dimov and the leadership of the Association discussed options for changing vehicle taxation so as to reflect the vehicle's impact on environment.

According to Association statistics, over 300,000 automobiles are registered in Bulgaria each year and only 3.25 per cent of them are five-year-old or younger.

The Association calls for improving the quality and efficiency of the mandatory technical checkups of vehicles and insist that vehicles without catalyst systems or those with excessive emissions should be suspended.
