Two-thirds of Bulgarians Worry about
Air, Water Pollution -
Survey


Sofia, March 13 (BTA) - Two-thirds of Bulgarians worry about the pollution of ambient air and potable water, according to a survey by Trend Agency. The survey is representative for the adult population of this country and was conducted among 1,004 respondents between February 1 and 8.

According to 46 per cent, the recent years have not seen a change of the environment in the settlements where they live. 14 percent believe that the quality of environment has improved and 27 per cent say it has deteriorated.

Forty per cent of Bulgarians say they are seeing worsening air pollution in their town in the last ten years. An equal number (41 per cent) say the level of air pollution has remained unchanged.

Slightly over two-thirds of the residents of the capital say the air quality in Sofia has deteriorated in the last ten years.

Sixty-three per cent of the respondents are concerned over the pollution of potable water. There is also much concern about the pollution of rivers: among 65 per cent and even 70 per cent of people in small towns and villages.

Two-thirds of Bulgarians worry about soil pollution and 25 per cent don't.

The largest number of respondents worry about deforestation (logging) and 73 per cent are concerned that forests are dying.

Slightly over half of Bulgarians are concerned about the increasing volume of industrial waste.

Nearly half of the Bulgarians (47 per cent) consider themselves nature lovers and 30 per cent don't.

Only 4 per cent of the respondents say they have introduced major changes in their habits helping to protect the environment. Forty-five per cent made small changes and 37 per cent have made none.

Twenty-six per cent say they recycle their waste. These are mostly younger people with better education. The majority of respondents (68 per cent) do not recycle their waste.

Twenty-two per cent buy biodegradable products, 72 per cent use energy saving bulbs and 66 per cent cut back on the amount of water they use. PK/BR
