Cardiovascular Failure
Affects Ever More People,
Specialists Say

Sofia, May 7 (BTA) - A growing number of people are affected by cardiovascular failure, cardiologists of various medical-treatment facilities concurred at a BTA-hosted news conference on Tuesday. The death-toll of cardiovascular disease increased by 2,220 in 2017, said Prof. Maria Tokmakova, President of the Bulgarian Society of Cardiology. In her words, as few as 30 per cent of Bulgarians are aware that cardiovascular conditions are the number one killer disease in this country.

Nearly 153,000 Bulgarians are kept under outpatient observation for cardiovascular failure, and 90 per cent of them are aged over 65, Prof. Tokmakova said, citing data of the National Health Insurance Fund for 2018.

Specialists, medicines and state-of-the-art treatment methods are readily accessible in Bulgaria, but the public is insufficiently well aware of this and ignore the problem, said Prof. Plamen Gatsov, head of the Clinic of Cardiology at the General Hospital for Active Treatment No. 2 in Sofia. Most patients with cardiovascular failure developed the disease after their hypertension was mistreated, said Prof. Arman Postadjian, head of the Cardiology Ward at Sofia's St Ann University Hospital.
