Socialists Unanimously
Approve Maya Manolova's
Bid to Run for Sofia Mayor

September 15 (BTA) - Former national ombudsman Maya Manolova's bid to run for Sofia mayor has been approved unanimously by the Bulgarian Socialist Party's (BSP) National Council here on Sunday, the Socialists' deputy leader, Kiril Dobrev, told journalists. "I am sure this model will be successful for Sofia," he said.

Manolova was nominated by an initiative committee as an independent candidate for the capital's mayor and was supported by the Socialists in Sofia.

BSP's National Council has confirmed Manolova's candidacy together with the other candidates, nominated for the upcoming local elections by the party's local structures.

Dobrev further said that the whole debate during the plenum was focused on who will top the candidates list for municipal councillors in the coastal city of Varna. The Left's deputy leader noted that the political confidence has been lifted from the head of BSP's Varna chapter, Borislav Goutsanov, and the members of the National Council are adamant that he cannot top BSP's list in Varna. Leader of the Vuzrazhdane political party Kostadin Kostadinov's bid to run for Varna mayor was also rejected, as according to Dobrev, the former's values differ from BSP's.

Prof. Anelia Klissarova will be BSP's candidate for Varna mayor and she will top the list, Dobrev commented, adding that there will be no drama.

The Socialists are nominating Nikolay Radev to run for Plovdiv (southern Bulgaria) mayor, Vessela Lecheva for Veliko Turnovo (central Bulgaria), Nikolay Tishev for the coastal city of Bourgas, Ivelin Nikolov for the central town of Gabrovo, Milko Bagdassarov for the southeastern town of Kurdzhali, Dencho Boyadzhiev for the northeastern town of Razgrad, Momchil Nenkov for the Danubian town of Silistra and Kolyo Mitev for the southeastern town of Sliven.
