September 17 (BTA) - A bill banning fur farms in Bulgaria
starting January 1, 2021 has been submitted to Parliament, head
of animal rights organization and a civil initiative for
banning fur farming, Petya Altimirska, told a BTA-hosted news
conference here on Tuesday.

The proposed bill amends the Veterinary Practice Act that has
been submitted to Parliament last Friday and is signed by 13
Socialist MPs.

The animals still bred for their fur in Europe include minks,
foxes, chinchillas and racoon dogs. They live an average of just
eight months in the farms, except for the animals used for
breeding, whose life-span is around four years, Altimirska
explained.

The public has matured already for a more humane treatment of
animals, said Gabriela Papadopova, who is a member of the
initiative committee, according to which so far 1,020 designers
and brands have declared their refusal to use or sell fur.

Answering a question, Altimirska noted that the already living
animals cannot be saved if the ban is adopted, but the unborn
ones can. She said that around 200,000 animals will be born
across fur farms in Bulgaria next April. IG/MY
