January 14 (BTA) - Emil Dimitrov was nominated as the new Environment and Water Minister in place of Neno Dimov at Tuesday's meeting of the ruling GERB-United Patriots coalition. Last week Dimov was arrested and charged with wilful mismanagement which led to a severe water crisis and water rationing in the western town of Pernik late in 2019.

Born in Pernik, economist Emil Dimitrov is an MP of the United Patriots. He started his career as an auditor and was named Auditor of the Year in 1997, which accounts for his nickname "Revizoro" (Auditor). In 2001, under Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha's government, he headed the Customs Directorate.

The nomination is expected to be put to the vote in Parliament on Wednesday or Thursday.

VMRO leader Krassimir Karakachanov, whose party had nominated Dimov, said at the meeting that VMRO did not accept the scapegoating of the ex-minister, who approved the monthly water use schedules based on the local water companies' reports. "We nominated Dimitrov, who is to order checks and prevent other possible crises. Call it a revision if you will," said Karakachanov.
