November 18 (BTA) - Caretaker Prime Minister in charge
of EU funds management Atanas Pekanov took part in the regular
EU General Affairs Council meeting here on Thursday. The EU
ministers discussed the contribution of cohesion policy
programmes to restoration, sustainability, digital transition
and cohesion, Bulgaria's Permanent Representation in the EU
reported.

The cohesion policy has long-term goals and addresses specific
problems at regional and local level, Pekanov said. Bulgaria
will get 11 billion euro between 2021 and 2027 from EU funds and
this is real money for businesses and local communities, he
said.

Pekanov stressed the need for a long-term national strategy and
comprehensive expert assessments, as well as for applying
established and working models when these funds are used.

According to him, the more efficient and clear distribution of
resources to poorer regions in this country will be among the
most important questions pertaining to the EU budget. The
cohesion policy has to be a driving force for growth and
well-being for the regions that cannot cope alone, especially
for those Bulgarian regions that suffer from the demographic
crisis, the sharp population decline, Pekanov said, quoted by
the press release. RY/MY
