Agriculture Ministry Wants Fees
Collected from Exceeding Dairy Production
Quotas to Be Given to Dairy Farmers

Berlin, January 17 (BTA) - The Bulgarian Agriculture and Food
Ministry will join efforts with other Member States to draft a
proposal for the European Commission, which calls for directing
the fees, collected from exceeding the dairy production quotas,
to help the EU dairy sector. Agriculture Minister Dessislava
Taneva's initiative received the support of Austrian Federal
Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water
Management Andra Rupprechter.

The two ministers conferred within the framework of the
International Green Week exhibition for the food, agricultural
and horticultural industries, held in Berlin.

The Bulgarian proposal calls for the distribution of the
collected fees in the form of direct aid for all diary farmers
on a European level. This will contribute to improving the
condition of the dairy sector, which is currently under huge
pressure, given the imposed ban on the export of dairy products
to Russia and the falling prices of milk across the EU, as well
as the upcoming termination of the production quotas for the
dairy sector, Minister Taneva said during the meeting.

She noted the importance of retaining milk production, as well
as supporting farmers in remote mountainous and disadvantaged
regions. Bulgaria will propose that transportation costs be
reimbursed to milk producers after the quota system is
terminated in 2015. SN/MY
