Bulgaria Is One of Three EU Countries to Have Met Their 2020 Renewables Targets

Brussels, March 11 (BTA) - Bulgaria is one of three EU member
states which have already met their 2020 national targets
concerning the share of energy from renewable sources in gross
final consumption of energy, the EU Statistical Office
(Eurostat) reported on March 10. In 2013, renewables in Bulgaria
accounted for 19 per cent of gross final consumption of energy,
which was more than the national target of 16 per cent that had
to be met by 2020. The other two countries which have reached
their national targets are Estonia and Sweden.

EU-wide, the share of energy from renewable sources in gross
final consumption of energy reached 15.0 per cent in 2013,
compared with 8.3 per cent in 2004, the first year for which the
data is available, Eurostat reported.

The share of renewables in gross final consumption of energy is
one of the headline indicators of the Europe 2020 strategy,
Eurostat recalled. The target to be reached by 2020 for the EU
is a share of 20 per cent energy from renewable sources in gross
final consumption of energy. Each EU member state has its own
Europe 2020 target. The national targets take into account the
member states' different starting points, renewable energy
potential and economic performance.
