Bulgaria Joins Petition for Common EU Standards on Prison Management

Brussels/Sofia, March 14 (BTA) - Bulgaria joined a petition to
the European Commission to organize a discussion on the
establishment of common EU standards for prison management,
Bulgarian Justice Minister Hristo Ivanov told journalists in
Brussels on March 13, emerging from a meeting of EU justice
ministers, Ivanov's Ministry reported.

The initiative for the petition came from the justice ministers
of Romania and Italy and has been joined by 10 member states,
Bulgaria included.

The hope is that the discussion will make it possible to obtain
funding through structural funds, for example, for the upgrading
 of prisons, Ivanov said.

Concerning a regulation on personal data protection and the
freedom of movement of personal data in the EU, which was
discussed at the meeting, Ivanov said that the ministers agreed
to exchange expertise because this is a new matter for some
member states.
