CITUB Demands Bulgarian State Not to Ratify Comprehensive Agreement with Canada if Certain Conditions Are Not Met

Sofia, May 7 (BTA) - The Confederation of Independent Trade
Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) insists that the Bulgarian state not
ratify the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA)
with Canada if the conditions set down by the European Trade
Union Confederation  (ETUC) are not met, the CITUB Coordination
Council said Thursday.

The trade union demands the inclusion of a separate section
concerning work and social rights and standards, clear rules for
service in public interest by providing countries with
sufficient autonomy to regulate these services and provide
protection of hired workers, consumers and citizens.

In November 2014, ETUC called for a fundamental rethink of major
trade negotiations with the United States and Canada. It made
clear that it opposed the CETA because: it includes an
Investor-State Dispute Settlement mechanism which gives
inappropriate legal advantages to foreign investors; it does not
unequivocally exclude public services in European countries
from areas that can be liberalised; and it does not include
enforcement procedures to guarantee the implementation of
standards of the International Labour Organisation. ETUC also
called on its affiliated organisations throughout Europe to
raise those concerns with their governments and elected
parliamentary representatives.
