No Serious Migration Pressure along Bulgaria's Borders, Border Police Chief Says

Sofia, September 16 (BTA) - There is no serious migration pressure along Bulgaria's borders, the Border Police Chief Antonio Angelov is quoted by the Interior Ministry as telling journalists on Wednesday.

Angelov said that Bulgarian citizens should remain calm. He assured that the Border Police is currently making all efforts to keep Bulgaria borders calm in light of the situation in Europe, adding that the pressure is heightened but that is typical for the whole EU right now.

A total of 7,640 persons have been detained since the beginning of this year for trying to cross the border illegally, which is 3,000 more compared to the same period of 2014. A total of 54 individuals were caught on the Bulgarian-Turkish border in the past 24 hours, 21 of whom were found in vehicles. A total of 242 persons were denied entry into Bulgaria through its green border with Turkey. Thirty-eight foreigners were detained for attempting to exit the country illegally through Bulgaria's border with Serbia in the past 24 hours, while 6,898 have been detained since the start of the year for the same reason.
