Ethiopian, Kenyan Athletes Win 32nd Sofia Marathon


Sofia, October 4 (BTA) - Ethiopian athlete Samuel Demie won the 32nd Sofia Marathon held on Sunday, with 2:16.40 hrs. - the second best time in the history of the race. Next came Kenyan athlete Moses Kiribe, followed by Gudeta Biratu, also from Kenya.

The winners received their awards from Youth and Sports Minister Krassen Kralev.

In the women's race, the first to finish was Rebecca Korir from Kenya with a record-short time for the Sofia Marathon and a personal record of 2:32.35 hrs. Next came Agnes Kibet, also from Kenya, followed by Arego Auaki [name may be misspelled] from Ethiopia.

A total of 1,124 runners took part in the 8.2 km, 20 km and 40.195 km distances, while more than 2,000 people ran in the 3 km mass distance.

The marathon was opened by Kralev, Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova and Bulgarian Olympic Committee Chairperson Stefka Kostadinova.

In his opening address, Kralev thanked Mayor Fandakova and the people in the Sofia City Hall "who managed to save one of the symbols of Sofia - its marathon, through the years".

The 2015 Sofia Marathon is part of the official events in the programme of Sofia: European Sports Capital 2018.
