Toronto/Sofia, July 17 (BTA) - A groundbreaking ceremony for a monument to Vassil Levski took place near the Eastern Orthodox church in Brampton, Canada, on July 16, the Bulgarian Consulate General in Toronto said.

The monument is dedicated to the 180th birth anniversary of the revolutionary who organized the struggle against Ottoman rule. The initiative came from Bulgaria's Honorary Consul in Mississauga, Ignat Kaneff, and the board of trustees of the St Dimiter Church in Brampton, with support from the Consulate General.

Bulgaria is marking the anniversary on July 18.

Addressing those present, Kaneff said: "I am glad we decided to have the monument here because it is history and heroes that make a State. We should not forget that Bulgaria will always be Bulgaria and we are always with it, wherever we are."
