Sofia, September 25 (BTA) - Bulgarian President Rumen Radev has congratulated Angela Merkel on the victory of the CDU/CSU coalition in Sunday's parliamentary elections in Germany, the head of State's Press Secretariat said on Monday.

"Voters' support is the most eloquent expression of the high appreciation of the success of your statesmanlike policy and vision for the development of Germany and Europe," Radev wrote in his letter. He expressed the Bulgarian people's desire for deeper and stronger friendly relations between the two countries, based on ties firmly rooted in history and constructive cooperation within the EU and NATO.

"Only with joint efforts can we successfully deal with the present challenges and contribute to building a strong and prosperous Europe in a fairer and peaceful world," the message reads.

For his part, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov sent German Chancellor Angela Merkel cordial congratulations on the convincing election victory of the Christian Democratic Union, the Government Information Service said on Monday.

"The results of these elections were critically important for the future of united Europe, and the support received from the majority of voters is the highest recognition for the policy that you implement which, for 12 straight years now, has focussed on the well-being of the German nation and on building a strong and prosperous Europe," the PM wrote in his letter. He emphasized that, as leader of the strongest political force in Germany, Angela Merkel can continue to rely on Bulgaria as a friend and strategic partner in the EU and NATO. "I particularly appreciate your personal commitment to the promotion of Bulgarian-German relations and Germany's valuable support for Bulgaria within the EU, especially in the context of the forthcoming Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Council," Borissov pointed out.
