Bulgarian Team Participates
In European
REST COAST Project
Sofia, February 3 (BTA) - A Bulgarian team is part of the European REST COAST project (Large scale RESToration of COASTal ecosystems through rivers to sea connectivity), the Institute of Oceanology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences said.
The project aims to demonstrate to what extent upscaled coastal restoration can provide a low-carbon adaptation, reducing risks and providing gains in biodiversity for vulnerable coastal ecosystems, such as wetlands or sea grass beds.
The Bulgarian team will focus on the habitats of seagrass in Foros Bay near Burgas (on the Black Sea). Activities will include experimental restoration of target habitats, assessment of risk factors for their existence and maintenance, and modeling and assessment of selected ecosystem services provided by seagrass. Measures will also be taken to improve the conditions in the adjacent coastal wetlands.
The main ecosystem services in the Bulgarian pilot region that will be assessed in the process of research include: the contribution of grasses to increase biodiversity, capture and retain carbon, and protect the coast from sea waves in current and future climate scenarios.
The selected pilot region is part of a network of nine pilot regions located in the Baltic, Mediterranean and Black seas, and the North Atlantic, which are hotspots in a European context.
By overcoming existing technical, managerial, economic and social barriers to the restoration of coastal ecosystems, REST COAST will contribute to restoring connectivity between coastal waters and their catchment area and increase the space for providing ecosystem services provided by coastal ecosystems in a sustainable way, the institute said.
The project aims to help increase the commitment of citizens, stakeholders and governments to the long-term maintenance of the process of restoring coastal ecosystems. The project is funded by the EU HORIZON 2020 research and innovation program. It involves 38 European Union partners from Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Bulgaria, Poland, along with the United Kingdom, Israel, Turkey and international institutions. The project was launched on October 1, 2021. and has a duration of 54 months. DT/BR
