Archaeologists discovered two graves of small children from the end of the 14th century during excavations at the Rusokastro Fortress in Kameno Municipality, said the Burgas Regional History Museum on Wednesday.
The graves seem to have been made hastily, leading archaeologists to think that there were extraordinary burial circumstances, possibly an epidemic. One of the graves is not according to the Christian rite. A previously unknown rectangular battle tower from the 13th century was also discovered, along with coins, and arrowheads.
In 2024, the Ministry of Culture did not support the excavations at the Rusokastro Fortress and they were carried out entirely with funds from Kameno Municipality. Dozens of other archaeological sites in Bulgaria are in the same situation due to the small amount of funds for archaeological research set in the national budget, said the Burgas Regional History Museum, who organizes and manages the excavations at the Rusokastro Fortress.
