The Bulgarian ID card won the first place for the best ID card in Europe for 2024 at this year's High Security Printing EMEA-2025 exhibition-conference, one of the most prestigious for designing and manufacturing ID documents, passports and banknotes, the Ministry of Interior said in a press release on Saturday.

The institution added that this is an outstanding recognition for the work done by the creative team of the Interior Ministry's employees in collaboration with the Consortium Muehlbauer ID Services GmbH - C&T.

In addition to the modern and aesthetic design, the Bulgarian ID card was awarded by the jury for the most advanced protections built into it, as well as for the electronic data carrier in which biometric data and electronic identity are digitally recorded.

The built-in protections significantly enhance the security of the new ID card and enable it to be used as an electronic document for travel and passage through electronic gates at border crossings.

The annual High Security Printing EMEA-2025 exhibition was held in Basel, Switzerland. It showcased cutting-edge solutions from world-leading companies in the field of e-passports, banknotes, smartcards and related industries, the Interior Ministry said.

On behalf of the Interior Ministry, the conference was attended by Stoyan Stefanov, Director of the Bulgarian Identity Documents Directorate, and Stanislava Stoynova, Chief Expert in the secure Documents Development Sector.
