The European Commission on Thursday unveiled a list of 39 projects for installing public electricity charging stations. A total investment of EUR 422 million, provided through the EU Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), will support a drive to deploy alternative fuels infrastructure in road, maritime and air transport.

The selected projects include high-power megawatt chargers for both heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles, developing hydrogen refueling stations and onshore power installations in ports as well as electrifying airports and providing infrastructure for alternative fuels such as ammonia and methanol for shipping.

Sustainable Transport and Tourism Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas said, quoted in a press release: "The 39 projects we are supporting today, will accelerate the deployment of critical recharging and refueling infrastructure needed for our expanding zero-emission fleets. Together, they will add nearly 5,000 new charging points, including 626 mega-watt chargers, helping citizens choose zero-emission vehicles and contribute to a cleaner environment."

With this selection, the AFIF will support approximately 2,500 electric recharging points for light-duty vehicles and 2,400 for heavy-duty vehicles along the European TEN-T road network, 35 hydrogen refuelling stations for cars, trucks and buses, the electrification of ground handling services in 8 airports, the greening of 9 ports and 2 ammonia and methanol bunkering facilities. The two-year budget totals EUR 1 billion.

One of the projects on the list envisages the deployment of 126 charging stations along European transport corridors, in parking areas and various urban locations in Bulgaria, Czechia, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.
