Alexander Vasilev secured a two- set victory over Finland’s top player Otto Virtanen, giving Bulgaria a 1–0 lead in the Davis Cup World Group I tie, often referred to as the unofficial world team championship in men’s tennis.
Vasilev, a finalist at the US Open Juniors, won 6–3, 7–5 in a match that lasted 1 hour and 50 minutes, in Plovdiv.
Thus, Bulgaria takes a 1–0 lead in the best-of-five series against Finland. Later today, Bulgaria’s top player Ivan Ivanov will face Emil Ruusuvuori in the second singles match.
If Bulgaria wins the tie, the team will advance to the Davis Cup Qualifiers in February next year (2026). In case of a loss, the team will have to play a relegation playoff in February 2026 to stay in World Group I.
