The Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Sofia Eleonora Mitrofanova was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the deliberate violation of the airspace of Poland, our NATO ally and EU partner, through the incursion of Russian military unmanned aerial vehicles on September 10, 2025, the Ministry said in a press release.
"The Director General for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Gergana Karadjova handed over a written démarche to Ambassador Mitrofanova, through which the Republic of Bulgaria condemns in the strongest possible terms the deliberate violation of Poland's airspace and expresses unwavering solidarity with our ally and partner.
"Bulgaria considers these irresponsible actions by the Russian side, including the incursion of a Russian drone into Romanian airspace on September 13, 2025, to be a threat to the security of European citizens, regional stability, and international peace.
"This provocation by Russia is not an isolated incident, but part of a series of unacceptable violations of the airspace of a number of EU and NATO member states since 2022, indicating an escalating Russian campaign, rather than a will for de-escalation.
"The blatant violation of Euro-Atlantic airspace, along with the continued massive Russian strikes against civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, strengthens Bulgaria’s determination to actively support and participate in the joint actions of our allies and partners. This commitment aims to ensure the defence and security of NATO and the EU on the Eastern Flank, and advance the diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation and securing a comprehensive, just, and sustainable peaceful solution to Russia's unprovoked military aggression against Ukraine.
"Bulgaria calls on the Russian Federation to immediately cease its attacks against Ukraine, as well as its dangerous provocations against European states, and engage seriously in meaningful negotiations to end hostilities as a first step toward establishing a lasting and just peace," the press release reads.
