Acting Bulgarian Football Union President Mihail Kasabov cabled condolences to his German counterpart Bernd Neuendorf on the passing of German football legend Franz Beckenbauer. The former Bayern Munich defender died on Monday at the age of 78.

"On behalf of the Bulgarian Football Union, the entire Bulgarian sports community, and on my own behalf, as his long-time personal friend, allow me to send my condolences to his wife Heidi, to his friends and relatives, and to the entire German football family", Kasabov said.

Beckenbauer was a highly respected and unique person who left his own mark on all areas of football thanks to his high expertise, enthusiasm, and charisma not only as a player, but also as a coach and manager. Memories of him and his deep empathy cannot be erased from football history, where Der Kaiser will forever remain as a true sporting revolutionary, Kasabov’s letter reads.

An exceptional friend of Bulgaria and Bulgarian football, Beckenbauer took a keen interest in football in Bulgaria and his warm attitude will never be forgotten, the letter further reads.
