The Bulgarian women's national team achieved a narrow victory over the very strong Azerbaijani team in the sixth round of the women's European Team Chess Championship here on Friday. The fifth-seeded Bulgaria scored a 2.5-1.5 victory against the second-seeded Azerbaijan.

Key to Bulgaria's success was IM Nurgyul Salimova win against IM Ulviyya Fataliyeva. In a marathon game that lasted 84 moves, Salimova came through to win with the black pieces. The Bulgarian had the advantage throughout the second half of the game, but Fataliyeva did not give up until she was three pawns down in the endgame.

Former Women's World Chess Champion GM Antoaneta Stefanova drew with the white pieces against Gunay Mammadzada. The other two games, Viktoria Radeva vs Khanim Balajayeva and Gergana Peycheva vs Gulnar Mammadova, also finished in a draw.

On Saturday, the women's national team of Bulgaria also defeated France.

The Bulgarians won with 3:1 points, for a total of 12, which gives them a one-point lead on France.

The tournament ends on Monday.
