Bulgarian Industrial Association (BIA) President Dobri Mitrev told BTA Sunday that administrative intervention in a market economy has never shown positive results and advised the Government to be cautious in what it does. At the celebrations of Bulgarian News Agency's (BTA) 127th anniversary, he commented on the Cabinet's intention to implement legislative changes regarding food prices.

"Certainly, let the State come into all its control functions, to supervise the market as it should be according to the Constitution and the laws of the country. The market will actually determine fair prices," added the BIA President.

On Saturday, after an emergency meeting at the Council of Ministers, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov announced that the Government is planning legislative measures to impose normalization along the entire food supply chain in order to eliminate unfair practices. The aim is thus to achieve a higher level of protection for Bulgarian producers, which will at the same time calm prices for end consumers of food products.

The Government has indicated that it does not plan measures such as price capping or restrictions on mark-ups.

The Government's action came amid calls for a boycott of major retailers in protest at food prices. The initiative is being organized by several civil society organizations in the country.
