Just over 31,276 violations in the construction sector were detected by labour inspectors in 2024, the General Labour Inspectorate Executive Agency (GIT) said Friday.  In 2024, inspectors carried out 6,682 inspections in the sector, with the total number of violations found exceeding 30,000. Of these, 21,690 related to ensuring healthy and safe working conditions, and 9,460 concerned the implementation of employment relations.

Labour inspectors have applied the measure of suspension of sites, machines, installations and workplaces in the sector 504 times, out of a total of 692, due to violations that directly endanger the life and health of workers. The measure is preventive in nature as it can lead to the prevention of work accidents and in some cases save lives. Of the 111 workers suspended for failing to comply with safety rules, 50 were carrying out construction work, the GIT said.

As a result of the increased control, the National Social Insurance Institute (NSI) reports a reduction in fatal accidents in the three economic activities of the construction sector from 20 in 2023 to 15 in 2024, the labour inspectorate said. The total number of accidents related to working conditions in the sector also saw a slight decline, from 201 to 198.

In 2024, the agency's inspection bodies carried out 49,858 inspections at 41,863 enterprises employing 1,755,669 workers, the GIT press centre said, specifying that 202,810 violations of labour law provisions were found during the inspections. Of these, 105 761 concerned the provision of healthy and safe working conditions and 95 793 concerned the implementation of labour relations.
