Bulgaria ranks second among EU countries in terms of growth of new car registrations (13.8%) in 2024 compared to 2023, according to the latest data of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), published Tuesday. Poland ranks first, with an annual growth of 16.1%.

In 2024, a total of 42,941 new cars are registered in Bulgaria, compared to 37,724 in 2023. The share of new cars with petrol engines is the highest compared to all new cars registered in the country last year - 76.4%. This represents a slight decrease compared to 2023, when this share amounted to 76%. The share of new diesel cars in Bulgaria in 2024 is 16.3%, followed by new battery electric vehicles (BEVs), which account for 3.9%. The share of newly registered hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) is lower at 2.3%, as is the share of plug-in hybrid cars (1.1%).

However, December 2024 saw a 12.6% decline in the growth of newly registered cars in Bulgaria compared to the same month in 2023. Against this backdrop, Bulgaria ranks last in the EU on this indicator, with 2,731 new cars registered in December 2024. The number of registered new cars in the European Union countries last year rose to about 10.6 million cars, an increase of 0.8% compared to 2023. Data for December 2024 show that new car registrations in the EU were 5.1% higher than a year earlier. However, the market for new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) contracted in December by 10.2% year-on-year to 144,367 vehicles.
