Тhe Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) has detected a new outbreak of sheep pox in the village of Uzundzhovo, Haskovo Municipality, the BFSA said. The disease has spread on a farm with 180 sheep.

A three-kilometre protection zone has been established around the outbreak, covering the village of Uzundzhovo. A 10-kilometre surveillance zone around the outbreak covering villages in three municipalities has also been marked.

In line with the rules of EU and national legislation, the Agency has taken measures to control and eradicate the disease through humane killing and disposal of all infected and contact small ruminants on the farm. The disease does not pose a risk to humans, but its spread causes significant economic damage, the BFSA said.

The first pox outbreak near Uzundzhovo was detected on a farm with 307 sheep and 217 goats on October 16. Two days later a new outbreak was reported on a nearby farm with 313 animals.
