site.btaFirst LNG Delivery from Alexandroupolis Terminal Marks Milestone in Bulgaria's Energy Diversification

The first delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Bulgaria from the newly opened terminal in Alexandroupolis, Greece, has been completed, the Ministry of Energy said in a press release on Thursday.

TotalEnergies Gas and Power Ltd. delivered 1 million MWh to the Bulgarian gas market after winning the first of five tenders announced by Bulgargaz EAD for deliveries scheduled between October 2024 and February 2025. This supply will be part of the October energy mix, along with gas from Azerbaijan and the Chiren underground storage facility, offering better pricing conditions for Bulgarian consumers.

"This is a historic moment for Bulgaria and the whole of Southeast Europe. Years ago, we chose to become shareholders in this facility, and now we have achieved true diversification. This new energy source will ensure the country's energy independence, boost economic competitiveness, and provide affordable heating for households," Energy Minister Vladimir Malinov said at the ship's welcoming ceremony. Bulgargaz EAD and Bulgartransgaz EAD CEOs Veselin Sinabov and Kiril Ravnachki also attended. They were joined by Energy and Water Regulatory Commission Chair Ivan Ivanov.

During the ceremony, Malinov said TotalEnergies' delivery to Bulgaria is the first for the new terminal. He also pointed out that the gas received on Thursday originates from Norway.

The LNG terminal in Alexandroupolis offers access to diversified supplies from reliable sources, including the US, Qatar and Egypt. This facility will help Bulgaria achieve its goals of energy security and independence, the Energy Ministry said.

"This is the first real step in the overall concept of the Vertical Gas Corridor, supported by our partners in the EU and the US," the Energy Minister said, explaining that this concept also includes the terminal in Revithoussa, Greece, the construction of the entire linear infrastructure for Bulgaria and the region, and the expansion of the Chiren underground gas storage facility.
