In 2022, young people in Bulgaria left their parental home at an average age of 30 and preferred to share one household with their parents for a longer period of time, according to a Eurostat survey made public Monday.

The same year, young people across the EU left their parental home on average at the age of 26.4 years. However, this average varied among the member states. Bulgaria and Spain share the fourth place, meaning that young people there are the fourth oldest in the EU, moving out at an average age of 30.3. Croatia held first place (33.4 years), followed by Slovakia (30.8) and Greece (30.7). Youths moved out earliest in Finland, at the age of 21.3 years, Sweden at 21.4, Denmark at 21.7 and Estonia at 22.7.

The widest gender gap was found in Romania, where young men left at 29.9 years and women at 25.4 years (4.5-year gender gap), followed by Bulgaria (4.1-year gap), with men moving out at 32.3 years and women at 28.2 years.

On average, men left the parental home later than women: men at the age of 27.3 years and women at 25.4 years in 2022, show Eurostat data. In the EU, Bulgaria has the second-highest average age at which young men move out of their parental home, following Croatia. Bulgaria is followed by Greece, Slovakia, Spain, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, and Portugal.
