A Bulgarian video mapping production by MP-Studio has won the silver prize at the international light art competition Shining Shanghai, the studio reported.
Titled “Peperuda [butterfly]: A Ritual for Rain”, the work was created for the Shenyu Li complex in Shanghai’s Jing’an district and was selected from 154 entries by artists from 32 countries. Spain received the gold award, while China and Germany took bronze.
This year’s theme, “Luminescent Roots: Stories from Home”, invited artists to translate the DNA of their nations into light poetry. MP-Studio’s piece presents the traditional Bulgarian rain ritual “Butterfly”, exploring climate, memory, and collective cultural expression.
This is MP-Studio’s second award in China; in 2023, the studio won gold at the Chongqing International Light Art Competition for its show Metamorph, inspired by Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis.
The Shanghai projections will run from 28 September to 7 October 2025, expected to reach 2.6 million live viewers and over two billion online.
MP-Studio is also known in Bulgaria as the creator of the LUNAR Light Festival, which has attracted over 600,000 visitors since 2022 and staged its first summer edition, LUNAR: Sea of Lights, at four Black Sea resorts this year.
