Soprano Raina Kabaivanska celebrated the 25th edition of her international master class at a gala concert held at the Sofia Opera and Ballet Friday evening, in collaboration with New Bulgarian University (NBU).
“I am grateful that there is love for music,” Kabaivanska said at the event. Plamen Kartalov, Director of the Sofia Opera and Ballet, described her as both a teacher and an inspiration, while NBU Rector Professor Plamen Doynov praised her role in connecting young singers to the global musical community.
Dr Georgi Tekev, producer of the master class, said the school has firmly placed Sofia on the world opera map. Maestro Nayden Todorov added that Kabaivanska’s efforts ensure a future for opera.
The concert featured international participants performing arias from works including The Barber of Seville, Macbeth, Don Carlos, Rigoletto, and Madama Butterfly. At the finale, Kabaivanska joined the soloists in performance.
Scholarships were awarded for continuing specialisation and new discoveries, and Kabaivanska received the “Person with a Significant Contribution to the Development of Philanthropy in Bulgaria” award, as well as the Ministry of Culture’s highest distinction, the Golden Century necklace.
A record 140 candidates from 30 countries competed for places in the 25th master class. Established in 2001, the programme has hosted 270 singers, 111 of whom received scholarships for study in Italy.
