Twelve plays have been nominated for the 13th edition of the Ivan Radoev National Competition for Bulgarian Drama, said Tinna Panayotova, PR Expert at the Dramatic and Puppet Theatre in Pleven on Monday.

Ten of the nominations are for dramatic theatre, with the other two for puppet theatre. Amongst them are Stairway to Heaven by Alexander Petrov, The Book of My Life by Ivan Dimitrov, In the Small Town by Nedyalko Delchev, Fairytale Miniatures for Puppet Theatre by Sonya Momchilova.

71 works by 65 authors from all over the country were submitted in this 13th edition of the competition. Among the authors are many proven playwrights and writers, as well as directors, journalists, teachers, lawyers and public figures.

A pleasant surprise for the jury was the participation of many young authors, such as tenth-grader Metodi Mihaylov from Radomir and 18-year-old Ralitsa Stoyanova from Veliko Tarnovo, which shows that in addition to traditional and proven names, novice authors are also interested in the competition, Panayotova noted.

The chair of the jury is the playwright and poet Stefan Ivanov, with jury members Theatre Critic Denitsa Ezekieva and the playwright Gergana Pirozova.

The award ceremony for the distinguished authors will take place on April 4. On the same day, a discussion on the trends and prospects of contemporary Bulgarian drama will take place, with the participation of the 12 nominated authors.

The Ivan Radoev National Competition for Bulgarian Drama has been held without interruption since 2001 every two years, the Pleven Theatre recalled. The grand prize is BGN 2000 and a bronze statuette made by the famous artist Ubavka Tonchev. The competition is organized under the patronage of Pleven Municipality and the Culture Ministry.
