An exhibition The Academy in the Principality and Kingdom of Bulgaria, showcasing the development of the National Academy of Art from its founding to the mid-20th century, as well as the role of the Bulgarian royal family in its life, opened in Sofia on Thursday. The exhibition is held under the patronage of Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, who attended the event alongside Vice President Iliana Iotova and Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev. The exhibition will be open for viewing until March 9.
The opening took place on the date when, in 1896, Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha's grandfather, Prince Ferdinand, decreed the establishment of the State Drawing School.
Iotova noted that the exhibition is another opportunity to remember the significant role of the royal families in founding the drawing school, as well as many other educational and music institutions in Bulgaria. "Culture will always have a place, despite the fact that many people neglect it or try to ignore it, because, in the end, we are a country built on education, culture and spirituality," she added.
The Vice President said that over the years, the National Academy of Art has produced renowned Bulgarian artists and sculptors who are well-known not only in Bulgaria but also in galleries around the world.
Sofia's Mayor said that art has long been part of the capital and highlighted the collaboration with the Art Academy in transforming urban spaces, as well as the Summer Academy for children.
