Cooking white halva for the Bulgarian carnival of Sirni Zagovezni, which is the Sunday before Lent, was included in the national Living Human Treasures programme. The nomination was made by the Iskra 1898 Community Centre in the town of Borovo, in particular by chairperson Mariana Mineva and secretary Atanaska Ivanova. This was also the nomination that won the regional stage of the selection, said Ruse Regional Administration PR Georgi Georgiev.
He explained that the award ceremony for Iskra 1898 Community Centre had taken place earlier on Friday at the Ministry of Culture, where Deputy Minister Kalin Velyov had presented the Centre with a certificate for inclusion in the representative list of our intangible cultural heritage.
The document is awarded in the field of social customs, rituals and festive events, and the group winner of the award is the group for authentic folklore at the cultural institution.
The secretary of the Community Centre Atanaska Ivanova recently said that the recipe for cooking halva dates back to the beginning of the twentieth century.
The Living Human Treasures - Bulgaria, which is part of the Living Human Treasures UNESCO programme, is organized by the Culture Ministry and encourages the bearers of intangible cultural heritage to practice the activities and pass on knowledge and skills to the next generations. The programme is carried out in two stages - regional and national. The activities or skills offered for registration must be from the spheres of manifestation of the intangible cultural heritage, according to the National Register of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
