Nearly 50 Cultural Figures Receive Golden Century Award

Nearly 50 people whose work has contributed to the field of culture received the Golden Century Award during a ceremony here on Thursday. Caretaker Minister of Culture Nayden Todorov presented the awards at the event, which was also attended by his deputy, Kalin Velyov, as well as by most of the recipients.

In his speech, Todorov said: "In recent months, the cultural sector in Bulgaria has been rocked by a series of scandals. These scandals have come at a very good time to remind us of what culture is, what its role is and why and how cultural figures are important, what distinguishes them from other people."

Golden Century Necklace was awarded to:

  • Krasimira Koldamova for her contribution to the Bulgarian ballet art
  • Raina Kabaivanska, one of the leading lirico-spinto sopranos of her generation
  • Prof. Dimo Dimov, founder of the Dimov Quartet and the Apollonia Festival of Arts
  • Vassil Kazandjiev, composer
  • Kostadin Kisyov, archaeologist and museum scholar
  • Georgi Gospodinov, the first Bulgarian to win the Booker Prize for his novel Time Shelter
  • Blagovesta Kasabova, historian and researcher of national literary processes
  • Kaludi Kaludov, opera singer and educator
  • Alzek Misheff, artist
  • Prof. Lyudmila Doncheva-Petkova, researcher of the Early Bulgarian Middle Ages.

Golden Century Star was awarded to:

  • Samuel Finzi, actor with dozens of roles in film
  • Edvin Sugarev, writer and poet
  • Maya Vaptzarova, director and playwright
  • Vasil Dimitrov, conductor, founder and executive director of Radio Classic FM
  • Prof. Konstantin Shopov, first director of the Shiroka Laka National School of Folk Arts
  • Rumen Dzhurov, expert with over 40 years in the system of the Ministry of Culture
  • Nikola Petkov, stage director with over 120 theatre productions
  • Boryana Sechanova, long-time director of the Arabesque Ballet
  • Raycho Hristov, conductor
  • Anita Tarasevich-Doynova, writer and editor.

Golden Century - Seal of Simeon the Great (golden) was awarded to:

  • Lyubozar Fratev for promoting of the city of Plovdiv as a tourist and cultural destination
  • Nedyalka Traykova for community and cultural activities
  • Kiril Nazarov, long-time chair of the Children's and Youth Literature section at the Union of Bulgarian Writers
  • Pavlina Pavlova, journalist at the Bulgarian National Radio
  • Dimitar Stoimenov, expert with years of experience in sphragistics and cartography
  • Asen Vladimirov for his creative and professional contribution to the development of Bulgarian film art
  • Nadia Boteva, pop and jazz singer
  • Dancho Baldzhiev-Valdi - illusionist with more than 10,000 performances.

Golden Century - Seal of Simeon the Great (silver) was awarded to:

  • Boyka Serafimova for her contribution to community centre activities and participation in cultural projects
  • Anna Parapunova for her contribution to community centre activities
  • Petko Kanevski, poet and writer
  • Vladimir Ardenski, journalist, writer and activist
  • Kalina Kaneva, journalist, writer and historian
  • Danka Georgieva, employee of the Archives State Agency
  • Svetlana Krasteva, employee of the Archives State Agency
  • Ivanka Gezenko, scriptwriter of documentaries at the Bulgarian National Television
  • Diana Stoyanova, professor at the University of Library Studies and Information Technologies
  • Vladimir Ivanov, director of the Popovo History Museum.
