Artist Slava George is looking for points of contact between contemporary challenges for women and fairy tales, announced the Plus 359 Gallery, where the artist's exhibition "Let Your Hair Down" will open on April 24.
The exhibition focuses on two main themes - alchemy and Bulgarian fairy tales in which women go through initiation. The artist uses the Jungian psychoanalytical approach, the gallery says.
Slava George combines installations, photography, textiles, sculpture, and other mediums. She focuses on the texts of "The Wild Swans" and "The Golden Girl," creating a site-specific project to guide the public through the journey of female heroes in their growth and self-empowerment.
"Let Your Hair Down" looks for current manifestations of the classical attributes of going through trials in fairy tales, drawing connections between the "weapons" of the woman in the 21st century, guaranteeing both economic and social independence, referring to the body and its needs and freedoms, and the archetypal ones.
The exhibition is supported by the National Culture Fund's "Debuts" programme.
Slava George lives in Sofia. She works in diverse areas of visual arts such as fashion design, sculpture, performance, video, and installation art. The themes explored in her work are in the fields of psychology, anthropology, ethnography, collective rituals, and alchemy.
