On the backdrop of persistent student protests in Serbia, a European Commission spokesperson said Monday that the Commission is following closely the events in Serbia and urged dialogue. "We obviously follow closely the current domestic political situation and we encourage all political actors to return to dialogue and refrain from escalating tensions," the spokesperson said.

He said the EC urges all political stakeholders to engage constructively in across-party political dialogue. This will allow the refocus of attention and energy on completing reforms in the carriers of the rule of law and stepping up EU accession talks "in line with the declared objectives of Serbian leadership and interest of the Serbian people". 

He also said that the Commission is concerned by "reported incidents against demonstrators" and expects to see speedy investigation of the matter.
