A book titled The Best Japanese Short Stories, compiled by US publisher Tuttle and put out in English in March 2023, is now available in Bulgarian, the Iztok-Zapad publishing house said on Tuesday.
The 14 authors featured in the anthology include Ryunosuke Akutagawa (The Garden), Nobel literature laureate Yasunari Kawabata (The Titmouse) and Kafu Nagai (The Fox), who are already familiar to local readers. The remaining 11 authors, who are published in Bulgarian for the first time, are Ton Satomi (Flash Storm), Gisaburo Juichiya (Grass), Riichi Yokomitsu (Mount Hiei), Kanoko Okamoto (Ivy Gates), Gishu Nakayama (Autumn Wind), Ango Sakaguchi (One Woman and the War), Fumiko Hayashi (Borneo Diamond), Morio Kita (Along the Mountain Ridge), Yumiko Kurahashi (Ugly Demons), Tsutomu Mizukami (Bamboo Flowers) and Jun'ichi Watanabe (Invitation to Suicide).
The 14 voices in the collection tell very different stories spanning 60 years of Japanese literature of the 20th century, Iztok-Zapad said. They trace the nation's changing social landscapes from multiple perspectives.
