Corresponding Member Evdokia Pasheva, Vice-President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), said that “women in science in Bulgaria have much to be proud of, yet, they still need a platform to share their achievements, discuss challenges, and, most importantly, find allies among women in business.” Pasheva was speaking at the round table discussion Women in Innovation held in Sofia on Thursday, organized by the Ladies' Forum.

“The profession of a woman working in science is a very demanding one,” Pasheva added. She explained that “the scientific career path is long, it lacks the visibility that other professions may enjoy, the material rewards are modest, but the satisfaction from results achieved is immense.”

Pasheva also highlighted several successful women-led BAS research teams whose work has already found practical applications. Among them are the team from the Institute of Polymers, led by Prof. Olya Stoilova, which developed polymers used in agricultural seed treatment; the research team, made up of women, that created a sensor for monitoring air pollution levels, which can be used in small farms; the team from the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering, which designed deep neural networks for more accurate and faster diagnosis of heart disease.

Pasheva described the cooperation between BAS, and the Ladies' Forum as fruitful and assured the gathering that the Academy would continue to be the organization’s partner in the future. “Because we need a helping hand and motivation of young women in science,” Pasheva said.

Ekaterina Zaharieva, European Commissioner for Startups, Research, and Innovation, is a special guest at the event.
