Burgas Municipality is looking for ways to develop the city as a city of innovation, science, knowledge and young people, Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov said during the Black Sea 2030: Partnership for a Sustainable Future International Forum in the seaside city on Friday.

Nikolov said that although Burgas Region is located on the periphery of the European Union and is directly affected by the consequences of the war in the northwestern part of the Black Sea, the residents of Burgas do not give up living, creating and developing there. "We (continue to) find the reason to live here, to create and develop," the mayor said, pointing out that it is through such forums that institutions, business, universities and the non-governmental sector find a common platform for implementing good ideas in the region.

"It is no coincidence that in recent years we have been allocating our own funds, as well as funds from European and national programmes, to create a base for knowledge, science and innovation," Nikolov said. He recalled that a university campus is currently being built in the city, local higher education institutions are being supported and new departments and branches aimed at scientific and innovative activities are being created.

"We want young people to find a reason to develop and stay here, with us," the mayor also emphasized, adding that it is meetings like this that inspire young people and provide prospects for a sustainable future for the city and the region.

The Black Sea 2030: Partnership for a Sustainable Future International Forum is organized by Burgas Municipality, in partnership with the ProspectiM Association and with the support of the scientific community, maritime business and the non-governmental sector. It focused on the green transition, the protection of the marine and coastal environment, digitalization and the promotion of innovations in the blue economy. The goal of the forum is to create a platform for visionary ideas and the exchange of good practices.
