Bulgarian Vesela Lecheva has been elected Vice President of the European Shooting Confederation (ESC) during the organization’s General Assembly, held in Yerevan, Armenia.
Lecheva, a two-time Olympic medallist, five-time world champion, eight-time European champion, and Shooter of the 20th Century according to the International Shooting Sport Federation, was elected by the delegates for a four-year term. Thirteen other candidates were in contention for the position. The Assembly also re-elected Alexander Ratner as ESC President for a second term.
Lecheva is the first Bulgarian woman to hold such a high-ranking position within the international governing structures of shooting sport.
“This is a new and great responsibility for me, as well as an undeniable recognition. I am pleased that Bulgarian shooting sport has earned its rightful place within the international structures. As Vice President, I will work even more devotedly for the development of the sport I love,” Lecheva said. She was also elected President of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee (BOC) on March 19.
During the two-day General Assembly, the ESC management presented its governance programme before 110 representatives of European shooting federations. The Confederation’s management priorities include promoting sporting development, financial sustainability, and transparent governance, as well as providing greater support for event organizers, investments in young and elite athletes, and technical and educational assistance for national federations.
The European Shooting Confederation is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, home also to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and numerous other international sports federations.
