site.btaReport Shows Progress in Bulgarian Businesses' Transition to Cage-free Eggs

Over 120 companies in Bulgaria have already transitioned to more ethical alternatives to eggs produced in cages, but many of the big retail chains and hotel groups are still lagging behind, the Campaigns and Activism for Animals in Industry (CAAI), a Bulgarian animal protection organization, said on Tuesday. The association presented the findings of the first report on Bulgarian businesses' progress on the commitments made to supply themselves with eggs from cage-free farms.

The report of CAAI and the Open Wings Alliance international coalition analyzed the commitments companies have made publicly and their actual implementation. 

The findings show that Bulgarian small- and medium-sized businesses, including restaurants, bakeries, and shops, are adapting the fastest to the new standards. On the other hands, some big international chains in Bulgaria are yet to report progress, which contradicts the commitments made by their international headquarters.

CAAI Chair Petya Altimirska commented that Bulgarian consumers clearly state they prefer more humanely produced products. The companies that meet that demand not only build a better public image but also reduce the business risk from the upcoming legislative changes in the EU and the shrinking market for eggs from caged hens.

CAAI calls on businesses in Bulgaria to follow the example of the companies which have already started supplying themselves with eggs from cage-free farms. The transition is a matter not only of ethics but also of long-term business sustainability, the association said.
